The closest position between the top of the piston and the middle of the crankshaft, which is the lowest position of the piston, is called the bottom dead center. The piston stroke refers to the interval between top dead center and bottom dead center, and the crankshaft radius refers to the interval from the middle of the connection between the crankshaft and the lower end of the connecting rod to the middle of the crankshaft. Each stroke of the piston corresponds to a crankshaft angle of 180 degrees. The volume swept by the piston from top dead center to bottom dead center is called the engine's operating volume or engine displacement and is indicated by the symbol VL.". The operating cycle of a four-stroke engine consists of four-piston strokes, namely intake stroke, contraction stroke, expansion stroke (power stroke), and exhaust stroke.
